This year, an extensive battle was fought among smartphone companies especially when considering the budget segment. Then in turn came Nokia 6.1 Plus, Mi A2, Honor 8X, Realme 2 Pro, Honor 8C, Xiaomi Note 6 Pro, Realme U1, and the latest Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2. The race continued with each company introducing multiple smartphones in this category within a span of 6 months.

- Content Guide
- SIM-Ejector Tool
- Transparent Soft Case
- SIM card giving 10GB free data per month for a whole year (only valid in China)
- 10W charger with USB type-C port
- Mi Play Smartphone

It has dual back cameras, an LED flash and the fingerprint scanner at the back.
The Mi Play comes in three attractive colors:
- Black – This glossy black color gives off a cool feeling making the smartphone stand out when compared to other ones from Xiaomi.
- Twilight Gold – This color is very unique and is non-existent for smartphones at this price range.
- Fantasy Blue – This color has become one of the standard colors available for every smartphone since Honor adopted it for its budget smartphone range.
Xiaomi Mi Play: Display
Mi Play has become the first Xiaomi phone to have the water-drop notch display screen. Although it has a new design, the bezels and the bottom chin is significantly larger than other smartphones with this aspect ratio. The Mi play also has:
- 5.8-inch screen – The screen size is moderate and the smartphone can be easily used even with one hand.
- FHD+ display – It has an IPS screen with a resolution of 2020 x 1080 pixels.
- 19:9 Aspect Ratio – This better aspect ratio makes the display vibrant and provides good viewing angles.
- 1500:1 Contrast Ratio
- 432 PPI
- New features – Different features have been added to adapt the display to various situations.

Xiaomi Mi Play: Hardware and Performance
The Mi Play also is the first smartphone that comes with the new MediaTek Helio P35 Chipset clocked at 2.3 GHz. This is an Octa-core 12 nm processor and comes with the IMG GE8320 GPU supporting up to 680 MHz. Thus this processor does not lose out to the Snapdragon chipsets found in other competitors at its price range.
The smartphone is currently only available in 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage variant in China.
It has an Antutu benchmark of 87144, which is slightly lower when one considers the powerful chipset and RAM/ROM provided. Yet, using the Dual Turbo Smart Acceleration technology to boost CPU and GPU, the device can provide a smooth gameplay experience for most games.
Xiaomi Mi Play: Software
It comes with the latest MIUI 10 based upon Android 8.1 Oreo. The UI comes with all the basic and essential Mi apps and may be quite attractive for people looking for functionality.
It comes with the support of Xiaomi’s own voice assistant – Xiao AI classmate. This smart AI helps the user in completing even complex tasks smoothly. There is not much of the info about the Xioami Voice Assistance but soon we will update you with that.
It also supports face detection and unlocks, along with the fingerprint option, making the device more secure.
Xiaomi Mi Play: Connectivity
The Mi Play comes with a SIM card which provides 10 GB free data per month to the user for one year. But this service is currently available to only the people in China. It also has:
- Dual Nano Sim slot with VoLTE support for both cards.
- Supports protocol 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (2.4G/5G) and Wi-Fi Direct.
- Latest Bluetooth 4.2
The navigation system is advanced and more accurate as it supports GPS, AGPS, GLONASS and Beidou positioning.
Xioami Mi Play: Camera
The rear cameras of Mi Play have a 12 MP main camera and another 2 MP secondary camera for depth-sensing. The front camera is an 8 MP which supports facial recognition.
The cameras support AI and thus comes with AI features found in other cameras like background blur, portrait mode, and HDR mode. The addition of the Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS) feature is both surprising and gratefully welcomed at this price. In proper lighting, the cameras can capture quite a lot of detail in its pictures giving more clear photos. In low light situations, the areas and details get blurred so as to generate and capture a single tone of the color.
Xioami Mi Play: Battery
One of the major drawbacks of the Mi play is its 3000 mAh battery. The battery cannot keep up even for a day with normal usage. Thus playing games for long hours is not possible with this device.
The 10 W charger coming with it is able to charge the device from 0 to 100% in just 2 hours, which is within the acceptable range.
Xiaomi Mi Play: Conclusion and Reviews
When it comes to design and display, the Xiaomi Mi Play leaves all of its competitors into dust. Even in the hardware department, the Mi Play can still contend with other top performance smartphones present in its category.
The only things which may upset the users/critics are its battery and theMIUI skin. Although the MIUI is very friendly and is the favorite choice of many people, a majority of the users still love and enjoy the clean and efficient stock Android.
Xioami Mi Play: Price and Where to Buy
As stated above, the Xioami Mi Play is now only available in China and its starting price is CNY 1099 (which is approximately Rs 11,000 in Indian currency). The company has yet to reveal news on any other variant or their price.
The phone is currently available on Xiaomi’s official Mi.com website.
