Windows password recovery is something you’ve probably wanted to do at some point. In this tutorial we’ll show you 3 simple ways to reset Windows 10 login / administrator password.
Method 1: Login with Another Admin Account
If you’ve created another admin account on your computer, then you can use it to log on for resetting other users’ passwords easily. Follow these steps to change or reset your forgotten administrator password:
Step 1: Press the Windows key + R together to open the Run command box, and enter lusrmgr and click OK.
Step 2: Click on Users on your left-hand side. After that, right-click on your user account on the right-hand side, and click Set Password.
Step 3: Enter the new password and confirm it, then click OK. Log off and you can then log back into Windows 10 with your regular account.
Method 2: Reset Microsoft Account Password
Windows 10, just like Windows 8, is integrated with Microsoft’s online services. Microsoft would prefer you sign into Windows with a Microsoft account. So there is a very big chance you’re using a Microsoft account. If you forgot Microsoft account password in Windows 10, here’s how to reset it:
Step 1: Go to the Microsoft account password reset page: https://account.live.com/password/reset from an accessible PC or smartphone. Choose ” I forgot my password” and then click Next.
Step 2: Enter your Microsoft account’s email address, and type in the captcha. Click Next.
Step 3: Select how you would like to receive your security code and click Send code.
Step 4: Type in the security code you received and click Next. It will take you to the password reset page, enter your new password twice and click Next.
Step 5: Start your locked computer and you can now log in to the Microsoft account with new password!
Method 3: Reset Forgotten Password of Local & Microsoft Account
If you’re still unable to reset forgotten Windows password, PCUnlocker would come to rescue you. This software is a Live CD that can boot off your computer, and give you access to the Windows installation, so you can easily reset your forgotten Windows password, as well as recovering access to your locked, expired or disabled system account.
I haven’t tested PCUnlocker on every edition of Windows, but many people swear it has a greater than 97% success rate. Here we go:
Step 1: To start, you need a working computer to create a PCUnlocker Live CD. Download the ISO image of PCUnlocker, and burn it to a CD. If you don’t have a CD burner, you can install the ISO file onto USB thumb drive using ISO2Disc.
Step 2: Insert the CD into your locked Windows 10 PC. When the computer is turned on, quickly press a function key (usually F2, F12, DEL, ESC, or F8) to access the Boot Options. Choose your CD under the device list to boot from CD.
Step 3: When PCUnlocker starts, you can see all local accounts stored in Security Account Manager on your computer. Choose your username for which you want to reset the password, click on “Reset Password” followed by “Restart”.
Step 4: Pull out the CD from your CD drive and boot to Windows 10. You can log in to your previously locked account without password.
Forgetting Windows password is not the end of the world. Using the above methods you can get back into Windows 10 with the minimum of fuss, when you forgot Administrator password or other sign-in login.
