Instagram is one of the best social media platforms out there. Businesses, influencers, and
common folk alike use it to connect with others. The kind of content you can post is endless. On the app, you’ll find everything from group shots and aesthetic coffee pics to short videos.

One of the most popular kinds of content, of course, is the selfie. We all take them for fun, but posting them can be intimidating. Especially when everyone else’s selfies seem flawless.

Taking the perfect selfie isn’t as hard as you might think it is. Here are X of the best tips to help you create Instagram- worth selfies!

1. Use Your Phone’s Camera

You might be tempted to use Instagram’s camera. After all, what’s easier than snapping a pic, editing it, and posting it straight to your page?

This is the more convenient option, sure. But there are some downsides to using Instagram’s camera.

For one, it doesn’t let you zoom in or take pics using different preset exposures. It also automatically crops all images into a square.

You’ll get better pics using your phone’s camera. You can take portrait, landscape, or square pics and crop them later as you see fit. In addition to zooming in, most smartphones have HDR (High Dynamic Range) that lets you snap pics using preset exposures.

2. Find the Right Lighting

Lighting can make or break your selfies.

If at all possible, stay away from fluorescent lighting. There’s something about it that’s unflattering, causing weird shadows or even tinting your skin.

The best kind of lighting is natural lighting. Go outside for your photoshoot. Or, snap pics near a window.

Natural lighting makes a world of difference. Even without makeup, your skin will glow.

Pro tip: Natural lighting is ideal, but too much can ruin a pic. Standing directly in the sun, for instance, can wash you out or cast shadows.

3. Experiment with Angles

Everyone has their good side. Find yours by experimenting with angles.

Tilt your head (or your phone) up and down, left and right until you get just the right shot. You’ll be surprised at how much of a difference slight angle adjustments can make.

4. Try Mirror Selfies

Mirror selfies are an iconic staple of Instagram and for a good reason. They’re easy to take and tend to come off as more “authentic.” Plus, they give you lots of creative freedom.

Some tips for taking great mirror selfies include:

  • Mix up your poses. Try standing, kneeling, or squatting to add some variety.
  • Dress up your phone case. When you take a mirror pic, your phone is inevitably going to be in the picture. One of these protective and cute phone cases can help the pic pop. Try matching the color to your outfit or Instagram feed for an unbeatable aesthetic.
  • Cover your face. Want to add a sense of mystery? Aren’t sure what facial expression to make? Just don’t want to show your face? A mirror selfie gives you the freedom to use your phone to cover part of your face!

 5. Edit Your Pics (Or Don’t)

Whether or not you edit your pics is up to you. If you don’t want to, then you don’t have to! But there’s no shame in editing. Some users find the process fun and even empowering.

If you choose to edit, be careful not to overdo it. Heavily-Facetuned pictures can come across as disingenuous.

6.Have Fun with It

At the end of the day, taking selfies shouldn’t be stressful. Don’t overthink it; if you find a cute pic, post it!
